A Timely Romance

Visiting me today in My Writing Corner is Veronica Lynch, author of the new Candy Hearts book, For Keeps.  Her real life story appealed to me because I was another of those women who felt I couldn't become what I really wanted to be back in the 60's. In my case it was a sportswriter and I ended up a journalist. In her case... well, sometimes your real life becomes great fodder for your writing life.

She says her experiences as a forensic nurse examiner, victim advocate, malpractice insurance investigator and nurse-paralegal are great for background in her award winnings novels and novellas. For setting, she has chosen her favorite places on earth: the Catskill and Adirondack Mountains, as well as the historic Thousand Islands regions of Upstate and Northern New York State.

Did you always want to be a writer?
I wanted to be a doctor but my mother told me [this was the late 50's and early 60's] becoming a doctor wasn't something women did. I started writing in nursing school and never stopped.  As a nurse in the Operating Room right out of training I learned real fast that women indeed become physicians and were successful at it. It was too late for me by then.
Tell us about your new Candy Hearts book.

As a Vintage Rose story, For Keeps takes place in the late 1980's when victim advocacy came into its prime. While advocates and cops 'hooking up' did happen, it was viewed by both sides of the issue as going over to the dark side. I wanted to show the conflict a professional woman might face with the idea of spending the rest of her life with a man who completes her versus remaining in an thankless occupation which often brings heartache and burnout.

What gave you the idea for the story?
Personal experience. There comes a time in the story when the heroine responds to the hotline only to find the hero on the other end. The essence of that conversation [“if I was any better, I'd scare myself”] actually happened. I laughed the rest of the day and still smile when I recall that man's voice. It was a gift in the middle of a very stressful day. I'm sure that poor cop thought I was a raving lunatic.
How do you normally come up with your characters?

From news accounts, either print or electronic. I often receive a newsletter from one of the charities I support, such as Doctors Without Borders, and think, I'm going to do a story about a woman physician with PTSD.

What did you like best about your current hero and heroine in your Candy Hearts book?
Keenan Rossi is patterned after a cop I once worked with. He had a great voice, the warmest hands in town and listened to my opinions. I miss him terribly. I like Meg Muldoon because she faced down detractors with grace and dignity. I wish I'd had half her courage back in the day.

How about a blurb?

Meghan Muldoon is at a crossroads: struggling to balance the demands of a high stress vocation as an advocate for victims of violence with her feelings for Keenan Rossi, a man who wants to make their relationship permanent.

On Valentine's Day,  a series of routine crises force Meg to question staying in a profession which fulfills her both professionally and spiritually—or devoting the rest of her life to the one person who completes her.

Which one is For Keeps?

A Devilish Good Romance

My guest today in My Writing Corner is Karilyn Bentley.  When did you realize you were meant to be a writer?

Probably when I was a child. When my parents punished me by sending me to my room, I would write lengthy pages of why they were wrong and pin it on my door for them to read. I also wrote a lot of stories vaguely similar to Nancy Drew (which was my favorite series when I was a kid!). And there was that time my English teacher said my story was too creative for the assignment, perhaps I wanted to take her creative writing class?

Tell us a little about your publishing journey and how you got your first book published.
My critique partner saw an ad from The Wild Rose Press asking for stories for their Got Wolf anthology. I submitted and was one of the top six winners. Werewolves in London was published in the anthology and my writing career was born! I was positive my editor would want my fantasy romance novel I had been trying to shop around so I sent it off. She politely declined, but did tell me what was wrong with it. Like, almost everything about it. Lesson learned, read the book you wrote several years ago before sending it off. No wonder she didn't want it! After two more complete revisions, Magical Lover was born. And, as they say, the rest is history.

What is the story “behind” your latest book, Demon Kissed? Where did you get the idea for it?

My urban fantasy series follows an arc of Gin's adventures as she becomes a demon huntress. This is the second book in the series. The idea came to me after reading an article. I thought it would make a good story but with the added touch of demons and a troubled protagonist who has to hunt them.

What do you like best about your heroine and hero?
They aren't perfect. And Gin's sassy. I like a little bit of sass in my heroines.
What is your writing process – outlining or just writing?
I'm a pantser, with some modifications. Which means, I have to have a beginning and an end as well as the turning point, or black moment. Other than that, I have no idea where the story will take me until I start writing it.
Any advice for a beginning writer? Don't be afraid to have others read your work and give you honest feedback. Listen. Sometimes they're right. J

What are you working on now? The third book in the Demon Huntress series, tentatively named, Demon Cursed.
How about a blurb?
Gin Crawford, the world's latest demon huntress, has no time to mourn her dead lover as she's called in to determine why a demon attack occurred at the local medical school. And not just any demon, but the one demon that gives her demon-killing bracelet the shivers. A dead professor, a lab full of missing anthrax, and a demon who turns good people into minions complicate her life. Can Gin and her mentor Aidan Smythe solve the mystery of the missing anthrax and the identity of the demon before someone else dies?

A Supernatural Romance

As we count down to Valentine's Day by reading wonderful romances, we're turning to the darker side of the genre with a ghostly tale. Visiting My Writing Corner today is Chrys Fey, a Florida writer who specializes in romantic suspense. How did you get started in publishing?

I started small with publishing a couple of poems and short stories online. It really wasn’t my publishing dream, and I wasn’t having any luck getting an agent, so I wrote Hurricane Crimes, a romantic-suspense story set in Florida. I knew I had to break into publishing somehow and decided Hurricane Crimes could be my ticket in. I sent it off to The Wild Rose Press and have been publishing with them for four years now.

Did you always want to be a writer?
Yes! I wrote my first story at the age of five. My mom was always writing children stories for me and my siblings. She was my inspiration to pick up a pen.

Your latest story is Witch of Death, a fantasy suspense short story. What do you like best about your heroine and hero?
I love that Reid is a cynic and that Libby sort of pushes his buttons. They clash in wonderful ways, making them a very fun duo to write about. I’ll show you what I mean:

Let's get a blurb.

Detective Reid Sanders doesn’t believe in the supernatural, but when he’s faced with a crime scene that defies the laws of nature, he has no other choice but to start believing. And solving a magical murder involves working with a witch.

Liberty Sawyer embodies the look of your classic evil witch, so, it’s no surprise when she uncovers the murderer is a witch that she becomes Reid’s number one suspect. If she can’t convince him otherwise, more people could lose their lives to dark magic, including her.

What is your writing process? Are you one of those people who outlined or do you just start writing?
I have to outline. If I didn’t, my stories wouldn’t make one bit of sense. Sometimes I do start writing a story with just the idea for the beginning and end. I prefer knowing how I’m going to get from point A to point B, though. In my outlines, I even include whole conversations!

Do you have any advice for a beginning writer?
I always say to never give up, no matter how hard it becomes. My other piece of advice, find a good beta reader! Beta readers are critical to help you spot plot holes and character problems in your story.

What are you working on now?
I am close, so close to publishing the sequel to Hurricane Crimes, which I mentioned above. This will be my first full-length novel. Soon I’ll be editing book 3...and at the same time starting book 4!

Good luck, Chrys, and how may readers get in touch with you?

Reunion Makes for A Spicy Romance

With Valentine's Day coming up next week, it is definitely a great time to focus on reading a good romance novel. The new Candy Hearts series from The Wild Rose Press is offering some wonderful selections for readers who love romance.  Today's guest author is Debra Druzy, who says she is a married, stay-at-home mom who balances her writing career with running errands and doing household chores.

Tell us about your new Candy Hearts book.
DARE ME is a sweet ’n spicy reunion romance that takes place on Valentine’s Day at a promotional wedding event on Long Island, in the fictitious town of Scenic View. Adam is the wedding photographer and Misty is a bridal stylist. As much as Misty tries to keep things on a professional level, she can’t help but fall for Adam all over again.

Where did you get the idea for it?
When The Wild Rose Press put out the Candy Hearts Romance call-for-submission, the first candy
heart saying that popped in my head was DARE ME, so I crafted the story around that title and the publisher’s specs. I’ve been a photographer’s assistant so I know what it’s like to shoot a wedding and thought it would be fun to incorporate an exaggerated version of that experience into the mix.

What do you like best about your heroine?
I like Misty’s strong work ethic. She’s a diligent professional with a major stake in her family’s bridal shoppe, so she never mixes business with pleasure—that is, until she reunites with Adam, her kindergarten crush.

What makes your hero special?
Adam’s every girls’ dreamboat—charismatic, creative, sensitive. He recently returned to Scenic View, hoping to reclaim his roots and finally settle down. But he didn’t come back to his hometown just to open a photography studio; he’s looking for Misty, hoping she’s still single after all these years.

How about a blurb?
For wedding stylist Misty Morningside, mixing business with pleasure is a professional no-no. That is, until she runs into wedding photographer Adam Wright at a Valentine’s Day event. Dare they set aside business for one night of pleasure?
That sounds like fun! What is your writing process – outlining or just writing?
Outline, definitely. But that doesn’t mean the story sticks to the plan. There’s enough of an outline for me to know the direction of the story, with some room for the characters to improvise.

Any advice for a beginning writer?
Write the story of your heart. Don’t worry about what anyone else is writing. Create something you want to read because you’ll be rereading it plenty of times during the writing and revising process, you don’t want to get bored with it.

What is your next project?
I’m currently revising a story that follows my first book SLEEPING WITH SANTA, with some spin-off Scenic View characters. And I’m making notes for a full-length romance between Adam and Misty that develops out of DARE ME.

How can readers get in touch with you?

A Sweet Treat

We have another sweet treat in store today as we feature another Candy Hearts release from The Wild Rose Press.  In the author's spotlight today is Evin Bevan and her new book, Text Me.

Did you always want to be a writer?
Heck no! I wanted to be a newscaster. At least I thought I did from about 8th grade until about my sophomore year of college. I could just picture myself on television with fancy hair and makeup, a great wardrobe, and all I had to do was read some lines from a script. At least, that’s what I thought at first.

By the time I realized I had no idea what a real newscaster did (and sadly my college didn’t prepare me very well for the job) I figured it was too late to change my educational path. I was on scholarship. In and out in four years was my goal.
Then, I got married, and essentially all of my ideas flew out the window and overseas with my husband’s career. Out of boredom, I entertained the idea I could write a novel to keep myself from going insane in my new secluded surroundings. I’ve always loved talking, so when I found myself alone in a foreign country, the voices in my head started talking. I just wrote them down, and became totally addicted.

How did you get started in publishing?
Well, I’ve never been one for wasting my writing. I spend years perfecting my stories. Why not publish? I sought out anyone that I thought might consider reading my work and low and behold I caught the eye of an editor at The Wild Rose Press. Thanks to her faith in me, I have continued with my love for writing.

What is your writing process – outlining or just writing?
Well, I’m a mixed bag. I see things in my head. I see scenes, or I hear scenes, or both, but never a full story. I may know that my hero has a certain job, he likes to fish, and he likes woman with blonde hair. I know that my heroine loves antiques, hates fishing, and outdoors. Something will come to mind that I have to jot down, then the next thing I know a story is born. I made tons of notes all around my manuscript, on stick notes, in notepads, etc. The whole process is actually very unorganized, but it gets done.

Do you have any advice for a beginning writer?
Yes, I do. You must read. Yes, I pulled out the bold. YOU MUST READ. Oh, and YOU MUST WRITE. Like all the time!

Read everything. Write everything. It doesn’t matter if it sucks or not. Write like it’s the best freaking thing in the world. Who knows? It could be one day. Read the authors you love and figure out what it is about them you love. Read books on writing, books on your craft, and take workshops or join writers groups. Writing is a solo act, but the friendships you make with other like-minded individuals are important in this business. Whenever I feel like giving up, they always snap me out of my funk.
Tell us about your latest book, Text Me,  and where you got the idea for it.

My newest/latest/greatest release comes out TODAY!! Yah!! It’s called Text Me, and it’s a Candy Hearts Romance being published with The Wild Rose Press. Last February, TWRP did a call for sweet/short romance stories that relate to the candy hearts we all eat at Valentine’s Day. The phrase Text Me stuck out like a an M&M in a bag of trail mix, and before I knew it I had a story outlined.

What do you like best about your heroine and hero?
Honestly, I like how quick my heroine is to tell lies. I know that sounds strange, but her lies land her in some situations that she has to dig herself out of. Fun stuff!

How about a blurb?

When Erika’s ex becomes her boss less than a year after dumping her by text, she gets desperate to find a date to the corporate Valentine’s dance so he doesn’t suspect she still has feelings for him. Though not a fan of texting for the obvious reason, she doesn’t have much choice but to tap the keypad in order to gain the attention of the only viable candidate from the classified ads.
Grayson made the mistake of listening to his brother a year ago and has regretted what he did to Erika ever since. But his brother’s next suggestion just might be his salvation when he takes out an ad for a Valentine’s date…and Erika answers.
Using a pseudo name and keeping contact to text messages only, Grayson’s plans to make Erika fall back in love with him appears to be working…until the date of the dance draws near, and she pushes a meeting—face to face.
That sounds like another Candy Hearts winner! What are you working on now?
Now? Well, let’s see. I think what are you NOT working on is the better question. When it rains it pours, and I am drowning in edits. Edits, edits and more edits for 3 books. Seriously! And, I’m toying with the idea of getting a series together for 2017. Those will definitely need a full outline, and as I said before, I’m just not that great with those. J

Real Love is Out of this World

We're continuing to preview and introduce readers to the romantic new Candy Hearts Series from The Wild Rose Press. Today we feature Charlotte Copper from Ontario -- as she says, "that's in Canada, eh?"

When Charlotte isn't working on her full time job, she loves to craft, read, go to movies, and of course, she also spends lots of time writing.  She is a big romance lover because she says she believes in happy endings.  That's one of the reasons she wants to see all her books published.  Her new book, is titled, Real Love, and it was released this month.  It's a romance that can lift your heart into outer space.

As a young girl, Monda was placed into the tutelage of Mistress Teevac. Trained to use her empathic  skills and educated in the ways to please a man, Monda is on her way to her new mate and master when her spaceship crashes. Rescued by a handsome space lieutenant, who literally makes her heart race, Monda’s eyes and heart are opened to new possibilities.

When Lieutenant Patrick Lancaster looks at the exotic Monda, he sees beautiful not alien. With an instinct to protect her and the desire to have her, he’d be honored to call her his own, but the starts have something else in mind. Or do they?

Want more?  Let's get an excerpt:

Her face was more angular than most. Her lips, thick. A constant pout, like she waited to be kissed. When he looked at her big blue eyes and long blue eyelashes, he thought exotic, not alien.
“Monda.” He reached to wipe the tear. No, it was not his place. He shoved his hand into his pocket. “I didn’t mean you. I don’t think of you as alien. I meant other aliens, like the green guys from Salvador. Have you seen them? About a meter high with pointed teeth. You can’t tell the males from the females except when they have their armor off.” He wanted to pull her into a hug. To comfort her and show her how sorry he felt. But she was promised to another, and while he might be an idiot, his mother also raised him as a gentleman. “Really, Monda, I’m sorry.”
       “I know,” she whispered.
“What I mean is you’re an alien but not an alien. You don’t look like an alien. Of course any guy would be honored to have a girlfriend like you.”
       “Any guy, but you.”

As a fan of science fiction and romance, that caught my attention. Real Love is available now.

Romantic Read from Cape Cod

The new year is a great time to start reading in a new line and this month we are featuring new releases from the new Candy Hearts series.  Today we are talking to romance author, Katie O'Sullivan, who lives on Cape Cod. She says living next to the Atlantic influences everything she writes, from her YA series about mermaids to her contemporary romances from The Wild Rose Press. Her newest work, Say Yes, was just released yesterday.

Tell us about your Candy Hearts book and where you got the idea for it.
My first two novels from The Wild Rose Press are set on Cape Cod in the summer – Crazy About You and My Kind of Crazy. But I also love Cape Cod in the winter time, and the thought of setting a Valentine story in the middle of winter sounded like a challenge – not your average Cape romance!

What do you like best about your heroine?
Darby Malone is strong, smart, capable when it comes to business, but also vulnerable when it comes to relationships. And I love her confidence in wearing bright colors!

What makes your hero special?
Ben Phillips is a successful artist, but he’s still willing to take chances and go outside his comfort zone. He’s not in it for the money; it’s really all about the art. And winning the girl.

What is your writing process – outlining or just writing?
Usually I let the characters lead the way and direct the storyline, but in this case the entire story came to me fully formed. I’d never written a novella before SAY YES and wasn’t even sure I could write a complete story in so few words, but in my head I watched it all like a Hallmark movie and made an outline. It flowed so easily, I’m thinking I should try it for a full-length story.

Any advice for a beginning writer?
Write. Sit down, butt in chair, and write something every day. And read widely, both in and out of your chosen genre.

What is your next project?
I’m currently working on another Cape Cod romance, this one a full-length novel set in upscale Chatham, in the kitchens of a 5-star summer resort. Oh, and a sequel to my psychic romantic suspense, Ghosts Don’t Lie, which came out in November from The Wild Rose Press.

How about a blurb on Say Yes?

Darby Malone has trouble saying no. Hosting a children’s Valentine party at her recently renovated gallery is the last straw, and the last time she intends to say yes to anything. That is, until she meets Ben, a well-known Cape Cod artist with eyes as deep and blue as the ocean. He stirs feelings in her that have been dormant for too long. Can she afford to say yes to him?

Ben Phillips needs this gallery show. His life has been empty since his wife died four years ago, his paintings the only thing giving him solace. But his style has changed, his art completely different than the breezy shore paintings he staked his reputation on. Can he convince Darby to give him a chance – and to consider him for more than just a place on her gallery walls? Will she give him a place in her heart as well?

That sounds like another wonderful Candy Hearts book. How can readers get in touch with you?
